Hello. This morning we found one of our hens who was acting odd. She didn’t run away when we came to her as she normally does. She isn’t new. We think it could be gapeworm because she make a noise a bit like the dog toys that you squeeze. She is not eating as she has diarrhea. We have put her by herself in another coop. What should we do? Is it contagious to cats and dogs ?

Btw she hasn’t got any back feathers bc our cockerel is so big he rips out her feathers when mating.

Gapeworm is actually not very common. It could be stridor, which is a partial airway obstruction. That can be from a respiratory infection, or from a bit of food or debris getting caught in the airway. Check her mouth and throat for any obvious things, see if there are any plaques or lesions in the mouth and throat. Check for any discharge from eyes, nares, beak, any facial swelling, any bubbles in the eyes, and bad smell around the face/beak. Can you get a fecal test done to check for internal parasites?
