My Cochin Bantam ate a couple of slugs about a month ago and has been gaping, stretching her neck and making choking sounds for the past couple of weeks-she is eating fine, her comb looks good, no runny nose or eyes and she isn't acting like she has a cold or is ill. A local woman who has raised chickens for years told me to get Ivermectin and treat the chicken. She told me to get the pour-over, but it's way too expensive for just 1 chicken. How much of the paste should I give my Cochin? A pea-sized portion? She weighs about 2 lbs. I think.

Thank you--I treated her w/the Safequard a couple of weeks ago for the roundworms that appeared in her cecal droppings. Roundworms are gone--but everyone has told me that Safeguard doesn't treat gapeworms.
I'm sorry that you were given misinformation about Safeguard not treating gapeworms. Safeguard DOES treat gapeworms.
Again, it would be best to take a fecal sample to a vet.

They lie! :lau

Seriously, gapes *are* treated with fenbendazole and the recommended dose is 0.14 ml per pound of body weight for five consecutive days.
