I have noticed that my Blue Laced Reds have been walking around with their mouths open. They stay open for the most part, but they do close them. They dont really shake their heads and dont have any runny nose or sneezing going on. I have opend some of their mouths to see if i could see something in there, but nothing. I have a couple game hens that seem to be normal with their mouths closed, but they dont run with the BLRWs. Do they have gapeworms? Or are they just hot? Temps are rising in the upper 80's (87-89) today. Any info would be nice.

Chickens pant like dogs to stay cool... Your chickens are probably hot! I spray down my chicken run when it gets warm and they love it.

They are free range chickens, just go the coop at night to roost...still think they may just be hot?

I live in Arizona my chickens constantly pant no matter how much water and shade they have and they used to free range until a stray st Bernard killed three of my favorites and I had to lock them up. I've only had my chickens a year and a half and haven't come across any sort of diseases yet, but I've read byc for quite a while, and they talk a lot about differnet symptoms... Runny poo, shaking their head, lethargy, wont eat, wont drink, sitting alone in a corner, not interacting... If yours has absolutley no other symptoms I would say they must be hot! Go out in their coop at night or early morning and see how they are acting.
