I am absolutely DONE caring that chickens aren't "legal" in my city. I have quail in my basement right now, and I'll be moving them out to the old rabbit hutches (that I raised meat rabbits in and no one complained) as soon as the weather stops being stupid and getting hot then cold then hot then COLD. I plan on having two quail "roos" out there with my 9 hens...and if no one says BOO about it (which I doubt they will....quail roos sound like wild birds)...then I'm just not going to be worried about a few silkie hens.

My plan is to build a "coop" area inside the back of my garage in the 3rd stall. (Which will look suspiciously like a indoor dog kennel) Right now we're just using it for storage and I can easily find a place for all of that stuff. Then I'm going to have a pop door out the back of the garage (dog sized...hmmmmmm) and a (dog) run snugged up behind the garage and next to the house. The only issue I worry about with the run is that it will be on a pretty good slope. Nothing really grows on it now because the water runs off too fast (which is good because it wont stay soggy and therefore get stinky). I'm planning on planting thick evergreen (and therefore ever-screening) bushes/hedges along the run sides and putting something over the gate so you cant see in easily (heck probably all over along with the bushes). If the chickens start eroding it too badly I'll just throw chainlink on the ground and dirt over it and cross my fingers lol.

I'm also planning on eating any seriously noisy egg song offender (though I'm hoping the garage will muffle a lot of it). I'm hoping between all my "tactics" and the fact that they will be silkies and not really look like chickens anyway...that I'll be able to get away with it.

Yes I realize that I'm setting myself up for heartbreak and a possible fine ($100) from the city. No I don't really care anymore. Our city council is a joke and a bunch of lieing jerks. They'll tell you one thing and then do the EXACT opposite...every time.

what city do you live in

Glad I don't live in your city. I like the rules where I live. I called my city hall and asked how may chicken I can have. Answer "we don't regulate poultry, we leave that up to the CC&R's in your subdivision." I don't have any CC&R's so as long as I am not a nuisance I can have what I want. :)

ive got it even better than that my neighbor on one side raises pigs and my neighbor on the other side raises cows and bees and the city said we dont regulate the are you live in cause it all use to be a giant farm and we are still regulated as such the developer that built our homes kept it as a farming community its awesome

I'm in a suburb of Des Moines, IA. Des Moines allows up to 30 for lots under one acre. A few of the suburbs allow them but limit the numbers more....the suburb I'm in....not so much. Trust me I'd move if I could...but it's just not feasible.
