Garden Shed to Chicken Coop

That would be a gable vent.....and that is chicken wire.

Eaves would be where lower edge of the sloping plane of the roof meets the side walls.

A couple more windows would be good too.

aart, carpentry is not my strong suit. additional windows are in the planning stages. the gable covers will be on during the winter months (located in central NC), and I will be putting different covers on during the spring and summer months.

A lot of us leave the top of the wall under the overhang on the sides open, especially when we build. That allows a lot of air movement and keeps rain and snow out. That lets in a lot of light too. I can’t tell how hard it would be for you to open up the top of your walls. Your siding may go all the way up to the roof.

The walls do go all the way up to the roof. I will have to see if I can cut some openings out.

Take a pic of under the low edge of the roof.......you may be able to remove the soffit,
IMO that's the best place to get weather proof ventilation there.

Darn, can't google a pic for you, glitchy ISP....
....the facia is on the ends of the roof rafters...
....the soffit is on the bottom of the ends of the roof rafters.
Does that make sense?

You could look at My Coop page... I rebuilt that roof and added large roof overhangs where there were none before, I put 1/2" hardware cloth on the soffit area instead of boards or perforated soffit material.

aart, here's a pic of the outside and inside wall of the building. I took a look at your build and don't see how I can do anything with mine.

Linoleum got laid today. All I needed was a box cutter and a staple gun. Now I can start building everything.

Quote: Hmmm..... that's weird....fake rafter ends on the outside...very strange build, certainly not standard construction....great pics tho, nice job on that.

Wonder if they added the extended roof later and added the fakey rafter ends on the outside then.

Would be hard to tear that out, probably not a good idea...depending on how it's fastened.
Could just drill a bunch of holes in that 2x4 between the real rafters and the fake ones with a 2" hole saw from the inside, would be hard tho.....
.......or take a sawzall to it....not sure what to advise.

Was built as a garden shed. Fake rafter ends provided roof overhang. Solid inside board prevented small animals easy access. Garden shed storing tools and lawn equipment does not generate moisture like chickens.

Would have been easier to put longer rafters and a real soffit(which would have kept animals out)....someone didn't know what they were doing.

aart ....... there is a building company here, Bunch Buildings, who is spread throughout 5 or 6 counties that build these.

What I am thinking of doing, and possible the best route, is to drill a 2 inch hole right below the double 2x4's on the inside (between the studs) and cover them with hardware cloth. They will still be placed well below the overhang on the outside to prevent any rain or snow on entering the building
