I would not put them in a garden that has fertilizer. They will eat anything and could get very sick and even die.

I have not fertilized it in like 3 years but there are still little white rocks in the bark dust.

Oh, that perlite stuff. I don't know if that's trouble for them or not. It's a mineral.... doesn't sound too bad, from this description.
