So very sorry to hear that Florin didn't make it despite all of your love and wonderful care for her - you could not have do any more for her, in fact you did all that any one could have done..... I am thinking of you and hoping that in time your memories will be of the happy times you shared with her.

Thank you all for your kind words. The other two are looking just fine this morning and as soon as I have a helper I'm heading out to sanitise their coop and run. Although she definitely had worms, she also had a very high temperature, which signals an infection of some kind. It may have been an opportunistic bacteria or virus that took hold when she was already ill from worms perhaps. I could second guess myself and the vet all day I suppose, but without a necropsy we won't know and after paying $100 just to get the antibiotics yesterday I can't afford to go through the same process for two more girls as well as have Florin's body examined for causes. (Especially with my own medical costs this week, and my car battery died and I had to buy a new one a few days ago. Not a good week for me

)

I now have to decide whether to postpone our new chicks until I'm certain no further infection is present... they are due to arrive in mid-December.

Airsaculitis has many causes. The vet sounds pretty smart and picked a great antibiotic for it. I seriously doubt the tapeworm (one of the few you can see with the naked eye) has anything to do with why she died. Normally with chickens by the time they get to the point yours was it, they've been sick for a long time. The other birds were probably able to fight the bacteria off. There's literally thousands of things it could've been to cause her respiratory problem. In my case here with a few of mine it was e.coli that caused it. But like I said-airsaculitis is caused my many many things.

Oh yes, you did say she had a high fever! Good call by your vet! The Baytril was exactly right for that. Still, now you have it on hand in case you need it for later. I think if you clean your coop out really well and treat the others (if needed) you'll probably be just fine in getting your new babies in. Again, terribly sorry about Florin.
