I noticed today that one of the 14 Salmon Faverolles chicks that I hatched last week seems to be gasping for air. It is clearly getting weaker and weighs .7ouce less than one of the other chicks. It does not have pasty butt, in fact it does not look like it has pooped at all. It is chirping loudly, I cleaned its' vent area and it does not appear that the vent is opening when it chirps.

Any thoughts?

Try getting it to drink some electrolytes and vitamins, or plain water and a couple of drops of Poultry NutriDrench. There could be something internal where she is not thriving.

Thanks for the quick reply. We were able to syringe a bit of water down her. She stopped chirping for a bit, but kept gasping. Her eyelids are closing and she does not seem to be able to stand up well. I think you are right, there is probably something internal. I will keep a close eye on her for a bit, but I do not want to prolong her suffering.

Good news update, at least so far! The little SF chick is doing much better today! She is not longer gasping and is not as wobbly as she was yesterday. She even ate a little bit of hard boiled egg yolk this morning. Lets hope for the best! I thought I would let her die at home with her hatch mates. I almost gave her back to Mother Nature last night but she seemed like a little fighter.
