Hi everyone! I have fifty - 3 month old pullets. I would like to keep my chickens out of the nests at night so I am searching for any ideas or plans for flip doors on hinges or lattice on a lever or anything that I can create to help me close up the nests at night.
Any ideas or pictures or links would be greatly appreciated.

Just cover the nests until they are old enough to lay. Make sure your roosts are higher than the nests, they prefer to roost as high as possible. They should be trained to the roosts by the time they are ready to lay, then you can uncover the nests.

thank you for that advice. I am going to move the roosts in the morning. I am looking for an idea to close the nests at night ... any thoughts or pics?

I picked up a used commercial 4 nest, nest box, the ramp (ladder) folds up and covers the nests, has a simple hing at each side. (1 bolt at each end) I only needed to fold it up for a few nights (3) and my pullets were on the roost and no longer had interest in the nests.

My pullets slept in their next box all piled together until they got too big to fit. I tried blocking them, etc. but finally decided to give up and hoped they would outgrow it, and they have. Now they are 20 weeks old and all roost on their roosts at night and really don't go in the boxes at all except to look around and then they jump out. i think they're getting ready to lay? Anyway, I worried for nothing.

Post a pic of the nests and maybe you'll get some suggestions. But really, getting the roost up higher than the nests will keep them from spending the night in the nests...and pooping in them.
