18 weeks ago yesterday, we started our chicken adventure with 3 White Leghorns and 3 Black Australorps. This morning, I went out to check on the feeder and saw these sitting on top of a white bag of bedding. We have one White Leghorn (the girls have named her Emma) that seems to have matured more quickly (much larger comb) and after I let the chickens out (they free-range during the day), Emma returned to the bag, so I'm guessing she's the layer.

Now to figure out how to get her and the others to use the nesting boxes. We've just set up what we have (milk crates and other various wooden boxes). Hopefully with some straw, we can convince them that's the hip place to lay.

Nice first eggs. No irregular shapes, firm shell, and normal size.

Congrats on your first eggs!! You'll never go back to store bought! Yes, hay in the boxes will help. Some folks put fake eggs (wooden eggs from the craft store or even golf balls) into the nest boxes to give the hens the idea. Good luck to you!

I did purchase an iPhone app to track the egg laying and it keeps track of size. I'm guessing those would qualify as "small" eggs since they seem pretty small compared to store-bought "Large" eggs. So I'm thinking 1oz - 1.5oz. Does that seem about right?

I don't care to buy a scale to weigh the eggs.
