Hi I am from Australia (Wollongong to be precise which is about an hour's drive south of Sydney).
My husband & I have had a succession of ex battery hens for many years. We are certainly no experts. I found this site as I am having trouble understanding why the current and the previous selection of ex battery hens giving us very few eggs. Everything is more or less the same as it has always been. I have been feeding the chooks with layer pellets topped up daily with kitchen refuse and the occasionally daily free run of the garden. Their 'shed' is a very large ex vegetable garden that has been roofed and walled with chicken wire and there is a nesting area above the ground. Their coat of feathers is thick and healthy esp after the shocking condition we often get the chooks. It has now been 4 months and this last lot of 3 chooks have only given us 5 eggs over 4 months including summer. We are just entering Autumn and it is still quite sunny and warm. The only thing I can think could be a contributing factor is that the chook yard/shed is in the shadow of the wind break which is why we gave it up as a vege garden.
Could this be the reason for the lack of eggs?
