G'day :)

My name is Kathy. I am a 38 year young Aussie Gal just taken on a brand new lifestyle change. Growing up I always wanted a farm. Up to the age of 37 it was the last thing on my mind, believing it would never happen. Born in the city, I moved to a smaller country town when I was 26, still in residential area with a very small yard. Worked all my life but never very well off with the financial side of things, doing anything different with my life was just never going to be an option we could afford.

Then just before Christmas I received a surprise offer out of the blue to manage a farm for someone else. Free rent for two years free power usage, and 46 acres I have no idea what to do with. I am not in a hurry to fill it, but I would love to see some chooks, ducks and maybe some geese wandering around the yards. So here I am, total rookie to keeping farm animals of any kind, to join a friendly group who share same interests so I can rave on and ask lots of silly questions.

I'm still in the process of deciding how to build a chook pen, so have none at the moment but have my heart set on getting just 5 or 6 bantem hens and couple of little roosters. I have an old shed that I want to do up, and a friend has bought me some fencing panels to use for a run. They are strong, predator proof panels and also for the floor and roof, too. He will be in a couple weeks so I have some time to get into fixing up the shed. I am so unhandy, and my husband who has been married into the animal world is too busy to even consider making me a pen. He's already said I can't have any but he's going away for 10 days end next week so am going to get them while he is away. He won't make me get rid of them, just says no beforehand so I have learnt not to tell him my plans until after they are etablished... hehe

Thanks for reading!

It's better to ask forgiveness than permission so they say! Best of luck and

Welcome Kathy! This forum is a great resource for all things chicken related! There are a fair few of us Aussies lurking around here too.

Sounds like you have some fun ahead! 46 acres is a nice amount of land.... (and room for plenty of chickens!)

My husband and I moved from the city and purchased a 20 acre farm in SW Victoria just over a year ago. We have filled it with animals and I've never felt more at home.
Looking forward to seeing you around on the forum!
