Gday gday from down under, mostly here for the quail but have an assortment of dogs and chicken as well. I like the building that comes along with owning them and always trying to find a way to improve the setup which is one of the other reasons I'm here. I enjoy incubating eggs and my two Plymouth Rock hens were the first I managed to incubate from eBay. Since then it's mostly been quail.
Speaking of, I just hatched out Jake's (White quail I have affectionately named after a certain Richmond Tigers player.) children a few days ago; so far I have eleven white chicks and a possible wild type. I'll try to post some pics up.
I have a main chicken roost made out of colorbond, plastic paneling and old jarrah 2x4s. I'm in the process of making it rat proof but I'm one of those types that does a sub par job the first time and toils endlessly away at upgrading it until it winds up looking like something from District 9.
My main quail cage is made out of two types of mesh in my quest to find the perfect mesh (doesn't seem to be at bunnings?) and plastic paneling while being on pine 2x4 stilts. I drew inspiration from that Chris bloke on YouTube. It's now mice/rat proof and sadly the number is only 6 after having around 24. Combination of underestimating Aussie summer heat and Rats. I'm thinking about setting up an IBC for both the chickens and quail when it comes to water. Just want something that's flexible and modular.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Sorta, I got my first batch of chickens 2 years ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
11 Hens and a Rooster named Diesel.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Australorps, Plymouths, Cochins, Gold Laced Wyandotte and 3 brooded out hens that look like a combination of Cochin/Wyandotte/Australorp (One hen has a brilliant silver band around her neck that is not gold like Lacy. She's a bit crabby though)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Listening to them and watching them is calming. I like how they tie into the cycle of gardening as well when it comes to their manure as I use it to grow veggies. Although this summer I might try some different leafy greens like pakchoi/rocket/spinach.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Incubating and raising quail, writing, gaming, operating excavators and bobcats, gardening, hydroponics, building things. Eventually I want to sell my car and move into a van.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I own a pair of toy poodles and while I'm here for the chickens, my focus will be more on the quail side of things when it comes to breeding. In saying that, the chickens aren't too bad at hatchin' their own eggs! There's an odd part of me that wants to try my hand at an Emu egg so it can roam the yard.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Mostly through google and figured why not.
