We have a Pilgrim gander, Pilgrim goose, and Buff goose that we got two years ago when they hatched. This year they hatched one egg successfully. It looks to be a Pilgrim gander, he is about 4-weeks old now. It looks like none of the other eggs will hatch, there was one we found dead by the nest with membrane still on her. I need advice on how to keep this group healthy and happy. We will soon have the two Pilgrim ganders (father and son) with the Pilgrim goose and Buff goose. So far, the three older birds are taking great care of the little one but I am concerned as he gets older there will be an issue. What would you do? We are wondering if we should try to find two geese around the same age as the baby so our ratios will be okay and he won't be the only young one? Or is that necessary?

If you want to keep the extra male it may be helpful to get a few more females. Things my be fine until next spring. I have multiple gander without too much troubles, but I also have lot of females.

I’ve heard to keep a 2:1 ratio, geese to ganders. I’ve also heard that they’re so flock oriented and are more like a blended family and I don’t know what that means.

I would like to get more females. If my original gander hadn't gotten so aggressive I would hatched more out. Though there is someone a couple hours away that breeds sebastical geese and they look to fluffy and soft and I can't help myself. I was supposed to have three females going into this year. I was so excited because this would be Poppy's first true egg laying season. I was going to get buried in goose eggs. But my other oldest goose Lois got picked off by a predator. Probably a fox because I know we have them hanging around. I just found her at the abandoned property next door with no head or innards.
