Our 3 geese have not been eating their grains these last few days. They eat the leafy greens we put in their pen but not the grains (Organic Grower). About 10 days ago we harvested 2 of our 5 geese. Anyone experienced this with their geese before?

Did you harvest where they could see? It is very upsetting for geese to witness their flock being killed whether by a predator or human for consumption. Losing 2 of their flock is hard on them. Hopefully soon they will be back to normal. Did they eat their Organic grower before all of this?

All they witnessed was my husband carrying the two away. They could not see any of the process. The day it happened, the remaining three stood around not interacting as usual, looking kind of lost. They've eaten the same grain for months.
We've decided to not harvest more geese. The remaining three will live here as pets, supplying fertilizer, huge eggs, entertainment and an alarm system.
We've had no problems dispatching chickens, but geese are on another level of sentience and intelligence.

That's awesome!! My gander who is 11 an a half years old I swear understands words I speak to him and both my female and gander know their names. They really are such a pleasure to have here on our hobby farm.

Please posts some pics when you have time I'd love to see them.

Hi Lydia! I will definitely post a photo of our 3 geese for you, soon. Need a good camera angle for a worthy pic. I have a question for you about chick grit. I put it out on the grass for our geese but they don't seem to be going for it. Can I put chick grit directly in with their grains so I know they are getting it like I do with our chickens and ducks?

Look forward to those pics.

I just put grit into a separate bowl out of the weather close to where their feed is. That way they eat it as needed.
