I have 8, almost 4 week old barred rock chicks. I'm thinking 2 are pullets based on their lighter coloring. Then there is my 'black sheep'. Not feathering out like the others in that barred pattern and just looks different. Even seems to be lacking combs or has some sort of disformation.

Can you help me with the genders of my chicks please and tell me what's with the 'black sheep'? I included a bunch of pictures to show color differences, if you need other types of pictures let me know. I'm a newbie to this.

I always thought the darker were the females. I could be wrong though. Your lighter one has a male look in that first pic too.

Your black sheep are simply not BR. I am not sure WHAT they are but darn interesting.

So what is a male look? I thought the darker were females too. But this random chicken is very dark and has wide legs and is larger than the rest.

The comb and the way that it meets the beak made me say male.
I did google it and everything says that the males always carry 2 white genes and the females always carry one. Males therefore are always lighter.
That means you got only 2 BR males.

The full black with the pea comb could be a beardless EE. What color are the legs? Green would be EE.
Interested in seeing how that oddball turns out.

Now I feel silly, I didn't realize there were different type of combs I messaged the lady I got the chicks from and she said it could be an Americana? How do you sex Americans?
