Hi all. This is baby Eeep the silkie, last photo is at 5 days. Others are today at 4 weeks old. What do we think for gender? It has some pink above the beak so was wondering if roo? Or is light pink also acceptable for a hen. Its only 4 weeks so very hard to tell. Also, what colour veriation is this? Was a light dove grey body with light buff head when a hatchling and now getting more white and light grey feathers. The head is staying a very light buff/cream colour. Also it has light grey eyes with a dark pupil (doesnt show in photo). Some sort of dove grey partridge? We can only keep hens so fingers crossed Eeep is a she as i just love the colours and haven't seen anything like this before. Thanks for the input!

Does Eeep have 5 toes? It looks like a silkie to me. Also, please forgive me if you already know its breed and are just looking for the specific coloring type. I'm very new to chickens, so I'm learning from trying to guess on these threads and then reading what others with more knowledge say so I can figure things out. I think, though, that if it is a silkie, they are somewhat tough to tell gender in the earlier weeks. But I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in soon. I'm sorry I'm not more help. Eeep is adorable!

Based on the comb, I'm going to say you have a little cockerel.
As for the color, I've had something similar hatch out a few years back. They looked like blue tailed white or a mix of that, so that's what I assumed they were. They also had a light head as chicks, blue wings and tail, and a white body. Interestingly, they also had pink combs, so maybe this color has something to do with the expression of fibro, but that's only a guess.

Hi! Yes sorry I should have added Eeep is a silkie :) we have 11 straight run, 6 that are a month old and 5 that are a week old. We can only keep hens and any roos are going back to the breeder (where they will be rehomed :) ) apparently its nearly impossible to sex at a younger age but I noticed the pink above the beak yesterday and wondered if that was a sign. Eeep is one of my favorites so hoping its a she :)

Thank you for the information. I've read so many books I've lost count, and read so much online. But honestly I feel like I'm learning the most by looking at chicks in stores and posts on here. I'll guess at breeds and/or genders, then read through and see how close I was. When I'm wrong, I'll read through to see what I missed. Lol, there's a lot that goes into having chickens, but I'm loving them.
