Hi all -

This is our first time raising chicks and we are so in love with our little flock! I know it is very early still but I was wondering if anyone has any guesses on gender for our BA chick? Yoshi is 4 weeks old today and I have been suspecting "roo" for a while strictly based on the fact that S/he did not have any tail feathers (not even fuzzy ones) until over 3 weeks old. I know this is not a for sure method but today I noticed a little bit of a pink waddle coming in and Yoshi has always stood and walked in an upright position...
I will be keeping him/her until we hear a crow in hopes that s/he is a pullet but we live in a city that does not allow roosters within city limits. We have a friend in a more rural setting with chickens who has offered to take Yoshi if it turns out to be a he... Any thoughts and guesses are appreciated! Thanks!

This was taken at about 3.5 weeks old - you can see the lack of tail feathers and posture

Also about 3.5 weeks - note the posture - S/he is always upright....

4 weeks old - Comb view - also just noticed the slightly pink wattle starting today...

4 weeks - Slightly pink wattle starting?

Like I said... I know 4 weeks is still too early to tell for certain.. I am just wanting some other's opinions... I know some of you have lots of experience with this! Thanks again!

I'm not overly familiar with this breed, but the fact that wattles are staring to come in so early is a bit of a concern.

If I had to put in a tentative guess, I'd say cockerel based on it's stance and the early wattle development.

Things can change quickly as they grow though, so perhaps post another picture in a few weeks time?

Good luck!

Update: I am still assuming pullet for Yoshi until I hear a crow... I am just so attached to these little birds and am feeling so impatient as I don't want to have to even think about parting with any of them!! Here are some updated pics of Yoshi - 5.5 weeks old... "she" made a very odd sound today, I am hoping it was just a weird cluck... Any thoughts on gender are always appreciated...

The last pic looks girl like but the middle pic looks boy like.
The noise you heard could have been the real cluck coming in or an early crow. Keep hanging in there. It could go either way.
