Gender help please!!

I love this little barred rock and from what I have read on the site he (dare I say it) looks like a rooster. The chick in front of it is a golden comet? I think it's a hen?



I ordered 4 barred rock and 5 golden comets. I think this one in the right front of the pic is a hen?



This is my largest chick and was larger from the begining. I think I have alot of roosters cause this one looks like a rooster too. If I can just determine one from the other maybe I can take it from there. I have read info on the site about sexting the chicks and I know it is difficult to tell but being that I am such a new egg I was hoping for some pointers from some of the more experienced folks I have a picture of the side of the heads of the barred rock and the golden comet above if it will help anyone.

Gold Comets should be sex-linked--so they should all be pullets if that's what you ordered. Did they all look the same as chicks and/or did you order straight run?

The Barred Rock in the top photo looks like a roo to me.

Golden Comets are sex-links. So there shouldn't be any question about whether they're boys or girls. Males will be mostly white. Females are the gold/red color.

By the way, Golden Comets will mature early. So the girls will develop combs earlier than the same-aged Barred Rocks. If the one barred rock has a larger comb that the other BRs that are the same age, then there's a good chance it's a boy.

Your barred rock is a cockeral.

All your sex links look like females to me. As stated, if any are silver or white vs red or brown or gold, those will be males. But I'm seeing all gold based from those pics.

I noticed the misspelling lol sex linked (oops) The lady I bought them from said they all.. (both breeds) were straight run.

I was hoping for the best there is where that inexperience comes in. Well at least I found that much out. Most of my comets have the red color but there is one that is smaller and is mostly white which is quite interesting. They looked the same as chicks but to me they were all the same just some were black and some were yellow lol. I thought I had a bunch of roosters because of the tail's sticking up like that hahahaha! Well now I know looks like I may have 1 Male Comet and some pretty hens to go with him

Since you bought them from "a lady" and not a hatchery, you need to find out if they are first generation or second generation. If she ordered some sex links from a hatchery and resold them, or put a red roo over silver hens and knows what she's doing and hatched out eggs, then you might actually have sex links. But as you said they're straight run, from a private person, my mind's saying she had sex link birds (Gold Comets) and bred them together, which means all bets are off as far as color indicating gender. The sex-linkage only works on that first generation cross, after that they're just mixed breed layers.

Whelp...I contacted "the lady" and she says they get the eggs from an AUCTION?? Who does that?? (Aparently they do) When asked about the generation of the birds they say they think second generation?? Seems they have NO IDEA. So now that I have my flock of babies....I will continue to raise them to see what we have in the bunch.

Those chicks look to be a lot darker than my Comets were at that age...they really are 'golden.'

I agree that the barred chick is a cockerel. In a couple weeks their breed will be more evident, along with gender. Sorry you wound up with a confusing seller!

Edit: Oh, and watch the babies for any signs of disease. Auctions are notorious for spreading infection.
