Genealogy, OMG, please stop me.

Several years ago my wife did some research and found out we are both related to Daniel Boone's grandfather. Since his parents are related, my 16 year old wanted to know of that made him a redneck.

I've always wanted to look up my family tree. My last name is not common at all so my only luck is with the few older family members I have left (all my grandparents are gone). I need to ask them about it when I see them again. I have found some names I recognize on the geneology websites, but of course you have to pay them to see more information

I have taken over from an aunt on my dad's side, and a cousin on my mom's side. Thanks to them, I had a lot to start with. Unfortunately, folk in my parents' generation are almost all gone, I got started late, and opportunities to ask the older generation questions have been lost.

Ask the questions while they are still alive!

Rootswebs and Family Search (Mormon church website) does not cost anything. Ancestry.com and related genealogy sites does most of the time.

If you want to access Ancestry for free, sign yourself for free to add family trees in what you have and take off from there in 7 day trial period. You would have to hunker down alot to get alot of the information from that website.

I'm just curious, has anyone besides myself uncovered any deep dark family secrets in their research? Back in the late 70's while in high school, I almost started a war...lol. Keep in mind this is when you actually had to go down to Vital Statistics and search rolls of micro-fish. I can't help but laugh every time I think about it.

Great thread!!!

My dads father was quite the story teller.

He told everyone that he had jumped ship from Sweden and that is how he got to the USA. My grandmother died in 1918 (flu) so that is the story my dad and his 2 sisters knew.

I did some searching, found grandpa's Ellis Island entry....as a Married man............hmmmm

Boy was my dad and his sister surprised! I gave both of them copies of the Ellis records and a picture of the ship

His name is unusual-only him, my dad-mom-me and his second wife with that last name. But I did find some on Facebook in Sweden. I would LOVE to send them a message and find out if they are long lost relatives-but saying your great grandpa that ran out on your great grandma might not be so welcome..lol

My great aunt worked on my maternal grandmother's side of the familyback to the 1700's. I took it a bit farther and traced one branch back to Nottingham, England where my ancestor was the Lord Mayor in the mid 1200's and another branch of that family that went to Northern Ireland and settled on land awarded to them by the King.
I'm trying to research my Irish ancestry on my dad's side, but I'm stuck at my great grandmother. Can't find any records on her except the 1930 census records. My paternal grandfather is proving more difficult since he was Portuguese and his parents immigrated to Hawaii from the Azores when he was very small. I don't have exact birth dates either. I have a couple of potential hits on a ship's manifest about the time they would have arrived in Hawaii but can't confirm anything.

It's very addicting I have to say, but also frustrating when you run into a dead end.
