Hi, i have a half polish, Half araucana hen that i would like to breed. Each of her parents have crests. I think I’m going to cross her with my Gold laced Wyandotte rooster, So I’m wondering if their offspring will have crests/Head puffs. I’m not sure about this because she is a cross which means her crest has part araucana part polish in it, Which means that it might not pass down? Also she is black so it would be good to know if her offspring would be black? Or more golden? thanks for any reply’s.

If her araucana parent has a crest, her araucana parent is not pure. Sounds like an easter egger.

She (the black hen) should pass on her crest and her offspring should be black with red leakage.

The op is from New Zealand and they have crested Araucanas there.

Cresting is dominant so the chicks will be crested.

Since she is a cross, it’s difficult to predict, but I would expect the offspring might be a bit of a mixed bag.

I’d expect that some might have slight crests, some none at all, but none fully created like a polish.

As for color, it depends on if the hens parents were both black, but if both were not then there’s a pretty good chance that half the offspring would be black, and half would something else, likely with some patterned spangles or partial lacing...but again it’s hard to predict without knowing what the hens parents were.

In any case, if you do get some chicks from this cross come back and show us what they look like!

Probably most if not all will have small crests, or what is called tassels, which means pretty much the same thing. The chicks will be mostly black but probably with some gold leakage, especially around the hackle, and the shoulders and saddle areas in the cockerels. Egg color will probably be greenish.
