I think the barring crossed on another color causes it. I have blue pullet, (just laid her first eggs this past week) and her daddy was my single barring gene olive egger roo from last year, and the mother is blue, her mom was a silver laced wyandotte, the daddy was a splash ameraucana... not sure if the silver lacing had anything to do with it, or the barring, or the combo. She is lighter blue with white tips on her feathers scattered throughout.

They are frizzles (they are their own breed over here), I always aim for the multicoloured ones as the frizzling looks more effective that way...

I am not sure on this breed but in OEGB both parents carry the spangle gene in order for their offspring to be fully spangle, other wise the offspring will have spangle at first but lose it as it get older. I don't know if this will help, I tried.

It looks to be a Incomplete spangling.
Is the hens a wheaten color? Hard for me to tell. If so I would say that is where the spangling came from..
