Genetics – Crossing a meat hen and a laying rooster

Tim, I'm pretty sure you've done enough freebie consulting to let go of the guilt.

I just hatched out quite a few varieties of chicken, and the Barred Rocks out grew all of my other purebreds. The only birds that not only kept up but out grew the BR's were a mix I bought for $2 a chick. 1/2 Brahma and 1/2 Buff Orpington. In three months they were as large as many of my purebred large fowl breeds. Not only do these mixes grow fast but they lay literally everyday. So I would have to be partial to a nice dual purpose mix of large breed fowl. Their friendly and IF you get attached to them they'll live a nice long healthy life. You don't get that with many Cornish mixes.
