genes and chromosomes are in linked chains... constantly sluffing the ends off and most of the time rebuilding them as the life cycle continues... sometimes during mating, and fertilization.. those gene pairs, aren't quite matched up like they are supposed to be, and so a genetic miscue happens... When on the right combo-- this is a mutation...

not all mutations are bad, and not all of them are ever noticed... mutations, are actually a good thing; most of the time.. that's what gives a natural, genetic difference...

it is suspected the growing problem of poor eye sight in americans, is linked to these sluffing of genes, and the fact that pair is gone when it comes time to mate and reproduce.. thus the offspring is born without that sequence for good eyes... that and computors suck for good eyes!

could be considered a mutation.

that's as basic as one can get.

Lets start basic, when a cell divides it basically makes two copies of everything inside the cell including the DNA. A mutation is a mistake made when a cells DNA is being copied for cell. This can happen in any cell, when it happens in a reproductive cell like a sperm or egg the offspring has the new trait. The vast majority of mutations are actually bad, so bad that they often kill the baby before it is born or hatches resulting in a miscarriage or dud egg (not all miscarriages and duds are because of a bad mutations). If the mutation does not kill the embryo and it is born you have a new mutant baby. In the wild the mutants often die because the mutation is bad in some way, i.e. a white tiger cannot stalk it prey. But if it helps the animal the animal passes the new trait on to its offspring and whah bam you have evolution. People have messed with this process however we only let the animals we like breed and so we have the variety of domestic animals we have today.

Wait...Mike L's real name is Carl? From Canada? I'm confused.

I heard mutations come from feeding layer pellets to ducks. I had a friend who had normal wood ducks and he fed them layer pellets and all the babies ended up silver! My common sense gene says the food is the problem?

More later...I have to go put some syrup on my waffles. YUM!

Well if the food was say radio active or had harmfull chemicals in it it could cause more mistakes and mutations but other than that I would say the parents were split silver and he did not know it.

You need to grow up Maam.Dont be confused or childish anymore Dr Todd. Im sure the moderators ON BYC can fix anything YOU, Me, Mike OR Carl might be confused with. Ill be more than happy to explain the situation to them and get this situation sorted out once and for all. At this point there is nothing funny about ANY of your subtle snide remarks towards me

Mike L: PM me so Destin Duck doesn't pick on me anymore. I'll help you with mutation questions.

Are you really from Canada? What province?
