The father of my chicks is Buff (mother) & Black (father). The mother is all buff. The chicks have hatched out in 3 different colors.
1 buff
2 black
1 brown

I'm sure the buff is a girl and one of the blacks is a boy. Is there anyway to tell the sex based off their color? In other words XX would have to be buff, and XY should be black. Or is the color not sex-linked? Which would explain the brown chicks.

Just wondering! thanks:D

Buff x Black is not sex-linked, but it passes on a good variety, as you see, with chick down coloration. The brown chicks will turn out a sort of partridge type color when grown. The black chicks with any brown or yellow markings around their underside or face will turn out mostly orangey w/black markings, and the black chicks will turn out mostly black w/reddish brown markings around the neck, sometimes the shoulders too.
