Quick update -- I ended up putting off culling Duke, my old rooster, for awhile. I have a few hens doing a hard molt, and to the extent Duke was keeping the young BCM's behavior in check, I thought that was a good thing. In fact, tonight the BCM tried to mate one of the pullets and Duke chased him off. So, I think he is cowed by Duke, and until my hens are re-feathered and back on top of their games, I'm going to leave Duke with the flock.
I do think the BCM has some vigor, as he put a stop of one of my 12 week old (non-keeper) cockerels crowing in the yard. I am keeping a close eye to see if the BCM decides he is going to take on Duke. I don't want to walk to fine a line.
