Not quite a backyard breeder since I have enough acres to be considered a farm in Georgia. I've had chickens on and off over 30+ years at the farm but recently decided I wanted to start up again. I chose Australops because they are a dual purpose chicken and are not mean like RIR. I got tired of walking into my chicken pen with a switch to beat off the mean RIR roosters. Though it was nice to see that a couple of well placed swats tamed them considerably. Ducks, on the other hand are messy. But the Khaki Campbell eggs are really great eating. My flock of Chinese Geese are mean as snakes and I use them to protect my ducks and chickens and train my sheep herding dogs.

Funny, you have had the exact opposite experience with your RIR and BA's than I did. Loved my RIR's but the BA's I had were nasty tempered, disliked people and caused trouble in the coop every chance they had.

Just goes to show, there are exceptions to every breed!
