This is the first I am hearing about it, but the discovery was made five years ago. I do see in 2018 companies were still vying to create a machine to sell to hatcheries to determine gender on day 9. Does anyone know if this is in practice anywhere? It seems like the US hatcheries all still have an overwhelming amount of males being born. I would love to see this eventually scale down to backyarders too.

There was probably a reason they stopped making it for companies to try using. Either it wasn't a high enough guarantee or it somehow damaged/poisoned the egg and embryo inside

It is an invasive procedure because the vein needs to be exposed meaning a small area of shell needs to be removed. This can cause a decreased hatch rate overall as all eggs need to be tested.

The article was a bit misleading by saying the male chicks would be 'tasteless'. They wouldn't be if they were grown up, it just isn't financially viable to keep them alive because they don't grow like a monster meat bird which can be slaughtered at 6 weeks old.
