And they lived! It was a horrible moment when I went outside to find what I thought was half a mutilated chicken and my neighbor (dog owner) calling over the fence "Sandy, I'm SO SORRY". But, we found the two chickens that were out free ranging (never unattended again) hiding behind bushes. One without a scratch, the other completely plucked on one side but in no other way harmed. She may look silly now and a little unhappy- but healthy and sound. Someone was looking out for my girls.

Just thought I'd share an attack with a happy ending.

That's scary/sad but at least they lived. i take it the dog belongs to your neighbor and she/he got him/her back? that's good. was the dog in trouble? I bet he was. Did he get loose or what? How did he get onto your property?

My neighbor and I have a fence between us that end into a small pond and the dog actually swam in the water to get around the fence and up on our property. I don't fault the owners- they usually keep a good eye on their dogs. Just like we usually keep an eye on the chickens. Dogs are dogs and when they want chicken dinner- watch out!

this is one of my biggest fears. only i am afraid our neighbors dog will get through our run somehow and get to the chickens. i have expressed my concern to them and they seem as if they could not care less. so i would probably have their dog destroyed if allowed. if not i would require it be muzzled and chained when out side.

We used to have a German Shepherd that would catch the occasional chicken and chew the feathers off her neck - occasionally took off a little skin, too, but amazingly these chickens all lived and did fine, and she never ever killed one, though she certainly had ample opportunity (we were less vigilant with our chickens back in those days). She eventually learned that was not allowed, but as a puppy those chickens were irresistable chewy toys. Maybe that's a GS thing?

I have a 2 1/2 y/o German Shepherd. Sierra doesn't give a rat's behind about the chickens usually. However, if they run from her, somehow the prey/chase drive kicks in, and I'm sure would lead to tragedy if I weren't there.

We're working on making her sit at all times when she's by the coop and run. If I tell her "MINE" she'll behave, but I know if she were alone, there would be big trouble.

First of all, my wife has a bird phobia.....and she let me get 25 chicks this spring....

Well it was sunday afternoon and my dear wife came outside to sit on her covered swing and get some air. Ever since she got pregnant(11 weeks to go) my one older GSD has gotten extremely protective of her, so they both were just relaxing out of the sun.

So anyways she wanted to see how big my chickens have gotten, so I went and got one out of the chicken tractor and brought it over and put it on the ground a good 15ft away from her...

I guess the chicken decided it wanted to sit up on the swing with my wife, so it ran towards her and took to the air flapping like crazy.... Wife screams (bird phobia) and Daisy dukers my gsd goes into guard mode and plucks it right out of the air by the neck.

I give the "leave it" command and the bird dropped out of my GSD's mouth and went on her merry way after a bit of squacking....

I couldnt really fault the dog because my wife's scream was what set her off and took the chicken as a threat, but am I ever glad I spent the time with her teaching her to "LEAVE IT"....

Happy ending besides my wife not wanting anything to do with the chicken after that...
