germinal disc size

Ok, here's a question for the chicken geeks of the world. I notice that when I check fertility, some of the germinal discs are quite large, while others are about 2/3 the size of the large ones. Any idea why? Is it possibly related to maturity of the disc, or strength of the embryo that would result from incubation? Related to defect in sperm or ova?
