I am getting a (hopefully) bred American Sable doe this weekend

. i'm supposed to get a buck too, but apparently the breeder (my old 4-H leader) had some trouble with litters this year, so that will have to wait. now i just need to find a Jersey Wooly breeder somewhere nearby with some to sell, and another Sable breeder (i need a doe from another line too). then my rabbit breeding can start up again. (i raised Woolies and Polish through high school, but that was a few years ago now).

of course, that does mean that i'm going to have to get my DH to get the hutches built soon, but since he is the one pushing for meat rabbits, hopefully it won't take him too long.

Good for you congratulations!

i got my rabbit

she is pretty, but one of those animals who plays with her dishes. i have a clip on food dish, but nothing as secure for water, so she keeps dumping it

i have two dishes in there now, hoping she will only dump and play with one at a time. it is helping, though last night i went out to feed her and one water dish was in the other. silly bunny. oh well.

my parents (who brought her to me) also brought a set of cages. the cages won't fit through the door into the little room off the garage where i keep the other rabbit i have and all of my animal feed. so she is in the garage itself. not the best place for a rabbit, especially one that might be pregnant, but it is what i have at the moment. i will be switching her and the other rabbit around, since he is in a bigger cage which she will need once i put the nest box in with her. but first i'm going to have to let that cage air out a while so it doesn't smell so much like buck when she goes in. the last thing i want to do right now is add more stress to her life.

it also amazes me that with this breed (American Sable), only one of the four possible colors of offspring are showable. and those are just the normal, to-be-expected, pure bred colors. i looked up the color genetics for them, and if you breed two showable rabbits, only about half of the offspring will be showable. i suppose that makes knowing which ones to eat easier, but it still seems weird.

Only about half of the dwarf breed babies have the potential to be showable, because of size, never mind breedings that produce non-showable colors. With many of the marked breeds (Dutch, Rhinelander, English Spot, Harlequin, etc) it isn't uncommon to only get one showable baby (and not even show-winning quality at that) in a litter, or even an entire breeding season!

thanks for pointing out the dwarf breeds. i used to raise Jersey Woolies, but somehow never put the dwarf genetics and the Sable color genetics together as being the same situation. the marked breeds have always seemed like too much work to me, but i know people love them. and i do have to admit that some of them are really neat looking with good markings.
