Complicated question..
I have just started on lionheads.
I have a doe who carries 1 copy of the lion head gene. I saw that the breeder i got this bunny from also has a doe with 2 copies with an amazing mane i am working towards but i am not able to get another from the breeder at the moment. There are many styles of mane and bib but i am looking to achieve this specific style that the breeder has. My single copied doe from them is all i have to work with for now.
My question is: since i had to breed her to a bunny that is not a lionhead carrier, if i was to breed her back to her maned babies, after maybe 2 generations, would the babies give me quality manes again like what their relatives have or is the quality ruined to the point where i would have to work hard for closer to maybe 6 years of selective breeding to get them to the same quality that i would have had if i just got another lionhead from the same breeder?
I know with chickens, once you cross breed, it can take years to get good results back from them and i am hoping it will be a simple fix rather than needing to just suck it up and get another lionhead from the breeder.
Here are pics:
The grey one is my doe
The colorful one is the double lionhead doe the breeder has
The tan/grey funky maned bunny is my does offspring
