Hi, my grandmother lives in Hopewell, NJ and she has started to keep chickens with my recommendation. According to Hopewell, a half acre lot allows you to own up to 6 hens. She bought 3 chickens, like me, and has been keeping them. They are 4 months old and today her neighbor told her she had to remove the hens since her lot was only 0.43 acres, not 0.5. She's gotten very attached to her chickens and wants a zoning variance so she could keep them. They're in great condtion, in a 500 dollar shelter, and eat all the pests she can find. I've visited her and noticed no bad smells near the cage; she cleans it once every 5 days.

I'm helping her file a zoning variance and I was wondering how any of you did it and what reasons you guys used. She's very attached to the chickens and at her old age, it would be much appreciated to help her keep the chickens.

Edit: She thought she lived on a half acre lot. Her friend rounded it up.

Go to the 'Raising Backyard Chickens' forum and click on 'Local chicken laws and ordinances and how to change them'. Hopefully something there will be of assistance.
