Veganism goes way beyond not eating meat.

Out of the belief that all animals should be afforded the moral right not to be harmed or exploited in any way whatsoever, Vegans modify their entire lives to keep from using animal products of any kind.

Imagine spending your whole life trying to exercise restraint from the temptation to use animal products...imagine the guilt you'd feel when you failed...the "sin" of those leather shoes in your closet..

It's pretty much all there..

goat walker, I dont understand why you would kill the snake no danger to anyone.

Guess sometime people must kill thing they fear. Really that snake was harmless.

Put yourself in her shoes. I kill my share of animals, but should have a reason, to eat, to protect something or someone.

I think Goat Walker did so as there was already a mob of poeple surrounding the snake, with a bat. Rather than have it slowly bludgoned to death by people who do not know what they are doing she dispatched it.

"Well While walking my friends dogs we see people start to gather round in the neighbors yard, went over to investigate and there was a 3 foot chicken snake - small. Well of course the adults were freaking out and the kids thought it was cool . Everyone wanted it dead though , but no one wanted to approach it. So I sent one of the boys off to get me a shovel, since one already had a bat. I used the bat to distract it then hold its head down, then severed the head with a shovel. "

SHe thinks , that just because she has horses, chickens, cats, goats, and such on HER AUNTS farm that she knows everything.

Are vegans allowed to keep animals as pets? I assume these are pets if she is a vegan, the chickens aren't for eggs...?

Not certain I know the rules on this.

Vegan's don't have "pet" they have "companion animals".

Goat walker, first I am sorry she is behaving like a spoiled child. But most importantly, why kill a snake it that is actually beneficial?

Killing dangerous snakes or ones that will kill chicks is one thing but learn your snakes so you know what to kill and what to let live.

Snakes eat rodents, some eat other snakes, most often the venomous ones. I have a almost 6' kingsnake in my yard...no one here would dare touch him or they will face my wrath...why? Because I also have diamondbacks in this wooded property. As long as Mr. Kingsnake is here by the house guess what is not by the house? The rattlers because Mr Kingsnake will eat em up!

For heaven's sake.....its a snake, people!

Plenty more where that one came from! Its not like she tortured it for fun or sacrificed it to pagan gods....she dispatched it. I say, "Good job!" and tell the friend to get on with ye life!

Millions of starving, tortured and homeless refugees in war torn countries and one makes such a fuss over a snake?

I say----get a life! Get two in case you wear one out.

I argee with this. by killing that snake there could be more problems in that ecosystem. I would never kill any animal. just live and let live. If it wasn't bothering anyone leave it alone. the people mobbing around the snake should have just walked away and the snake would have left. I really don't like when people kill something simply because it was bothering them, maybe all of the people were bothering the snake. yes, i'm sticking up for the snake, why because it can't speak for itself. If i was in that situation I would have told everyone to just ignore the snake and walk away.I am sorry that your friend is mad at you, maybe next time you should avoid telling her things like that, seeing how she got so upset.(i don't know the whole situation, so i don't want it to seem like i'm blaming you, you did what yoiu felt was right to do, but to other people it may be seen as cruel ) Hopefully both of you will be able to become friends again. I understand that yoiu killed the snake so that way no one got hurt, one of my neighbors does that adn it makes me sad, but like i said maybe your friend was too sensitive to find out that you killed it.

For many years I was a sort-of vegetarian, mostly because I often have a bad reaction to beef, and did not like what I knew about the meat raising and slaughtering industry. One thing I learned is that there are a multitude of viewpoints out there. For example, vegans who wear leather shoes, on the premise that there is nothing to be gained by wasting the skin, as cattle are not primarily killed for the skin anyway.

I still don't eat beef, not over any principle but because it now tastes rotten to me (accidental mouthful here and there.) Might be that naturally raised beef would not cause the reaction; don't know. I do now see raising one's own food, meat or veg, as the sanest way to go. Anyone read the article recently posted here abut how most commercial chicken meat still has arsenic in it? Ugh.

I now find all that theorizing and wrangling over the logic of, animals do/do not have a right not to be eaten, OK to eat a plant's product but not the whole plant, endlessly boring.

JMHO, obviously.
