We are new to the world of raising/caring for chickens. We have been buying local farm fresh eggs for many many years and decided over the winter to jump in and try to have our own chickens. We have a 22 year old son who has Down syndrome and loves animals. This is going to be mainly his project with support from us. He is going to sell the extra eggs to help offset the costs and give him a little pocket change (we'll pay him for our eggs too!). We currently pay $5.00 a dozen for our eggs and we have a list of people who want to be our son's 1st customers
We are starting with 10 chickens. We are picking them up this weekend and they are 17 weeks old. We plan on feeding them organic feed pellets and our table scraps. We belong to local CSA's for our veggies and meats so we often have lots of "left over" veggies that I am sure the girls will love!
We're a little nervous after doing the reading about all the things we need to be looking out for but after raising 3 children we figure we can probably handle it. We do have 3 golden retrievers so we are a little worried about their interactions but we have a plan in place to keep everyone safe!
I am glad to have found this site and look forward to being educated by the "professionals" who are currently raising backyard chickens.
