Getting chickens

So if i downs up getting an Egyptian how do I prevent it from flying away when I let it out of the coop

well if you are planning to get chicks this year, i would get them really soon so they have time to grow up before winter. If not, then you might want to wait till next spring.

you can clip their wings, though they still seem to figure out how to get over the 5 ft fence sometimes.

What is you yard like?
is it fully fenced or not?
Do you have acreage in the country or a backyard in the city?
Do you have close neighbors or no neighbors?
Do you have gardens you don't want destroyed?

My yard is a regular back yard with a shed
We have invisible fence to keep the dogs in there's a good 10 feet in between each house and we do have a garden

ok, so egyptians like to wander. With no fence, they will pretty much be everywhere you don't want them (neighbors yard, street, garden, porch, front yard, etc). They will destroy the garden pretty fast, they love eating veggies. I would really not let them free range. I would set up some sort of run or even a simple yard just to help contain them. Really, its not even just egyptians, its most chickens.

What are the dimensions on your coop and how many chickens were you thinking??

We are still in the planning stage and haven't bought anything yet

ok, cool. Well, as you're planning, totally look at some run ideas, and see what you can work out (if you're building your own). If you have the money and don't want to build a run, a chain link outdoor dog run works well for a few chickens. I usually put a tarp over the top to keep the ground from getting muddy. Works well for my breeding bantam groups are 4-6 standard. I get old ones off craigslist for cheap and fix em up, though i can build things, it sometimes is cheaper for me to buy the dog run. Chain link is nice and strong, and will keep you dog out. What kind of dog do you have??
