First of all I'm new here to BYC, been lurking for a while off and on doing my research before we take the plunge. I decided to join the forums here because this is the friendliest and best place for information I've found on the internet, thank you all!

So today were going to get our chicks, I have 3 Black Jersey Giant pullets(1-2 days old) on hold from the shipment that's coming in to a local feed store and I've read about chicken math...so I know that I may end up leaving with more than the 3 BJGs

But back to my question, I know what to look for health wise when we go but has anyone found that they can tell personality from such a young age? We want the chickens as layers(we don't eat a lot of eggs) but primarily as insect control and pets.

they definitely show if they like you or not at a young age. If you have any roos spend A LOT of time with them. This will make them friendly when the grow up.

When you go to look over the chicks to make your selection, watch out for any chick who is running around pecking the others. Those tend to turn out to be roosters.

At two days old, that's about all you can hope to discern about individual personality.

As far as breed temperament, some are more friendly, tame, and quiet than others, so read up on the breeds and make your selection carefully..

Thanks for the info, it was pretty easy to pick out my little chickies not so easy to only leave with 3 though, but I some how managed! I'll be sure to post picks in the next few days, they are so cute!
