Getting flack for killing our meaties -- and need some reassurance!

I bought day old meat birds that were delivered to the post office. Everyone wants to see the adorable little ones and I want a DOA count, so we open the box. Someone asks what type of chicken they are, I say "meat birds" and the room goes quiet, until someone says "Oh, I could never eat that".
1. If you eat chicken, this is how it starts out.
2. Of course not - they a day old and barely bite sized

The meat disconnect is worse in many other cases, especially with those that...

Won't even cook their own meat!

"It's dirty, gross" et cetera.

(Sorry if this has already been mentioned. I skipped several pages to the end.)

I'm a vegetarian and even I have no issue with someone raising their own meat birds if they eat meat.

*I* won't do it, but as part of my vegetarianism is due to the treatment of animals in factory farms, knowing that someone that eats meat is eating humanely raised and slaughtered is a plus in my book.

I have run into that before, people who think cooking is dirty or thta meat in any form other than bite-sized nad boneless is dirty and I just can't relate. ESPECIALLY after knowing many cooks and poeple who work in kitchens that are VERY careful about who prepares their food, preferring to do it themselves. No one is going to be cleaner and more careful about what they feed you and your family than, YOU.

Dan, I like the idea, if someone closer to me set something up, I'd be inclined to think about it

. We do this at my brother-in-law's farm for beef. I currently outsource my chicken slaughtering, but the wife helps with the processing. Our friends don't want to help with either, but always ask if they pay for the food and an part of the slaughter cost, would we raise an extra 15 meaties for them - and they'll come over and "pick them up when we are done". I think the "slaughter cost" just went to $10/bird.

I am so happy to hear we are not the only ones dealing with this. Whew!!! I was beginning to think like my neighbor's for a minute, the ones who think we must be serial killers because we butcher animals. JK But seriously; I am really glad for the replies. Thanks everyone. So I am not insane, whew. I am still amazed at the response from so many people but I am also relieved to know so many also feel the same about raising meaties. And my husband and I have decided to have a Slaughter Party after all, on October 31 at midnight. My neighbors shouldn't mind. Do you think that'd look bad? (haha) We will have a bonfire and roast our processed chickens like marshmallows. My neighbor's daughter would freak the old ladies would be convinced we are satanists, and we'd be tarred and feathered. I could only imagine....but I'd never do this of course

Tell them to read "Skinny grump". It's all about the things they put into our food and how bad they are for us. Great book and its funny.
