Getting flack for killing our meaties -- and need some reassurance!

Have them watch the documentary called Food Inc. You can rent it and pass it around. It has actually convinced me to try to never eat at McDonalds. Everyone should watch it. It is extremely eye opening.

I SO agree with this! We watched that for a class last semester and it convinced me to become what my friends like to call an "organic vegetarian", meaning I don't eat anything I didn't have a hand in raising/slaughtering. (Except when our neighbors raise cattle and chickens and give us some!)
People think I'm crazy, but I tell them "I don't like killing a living creature anymore than the next person. But it's good on my conscious knowing the chicken on my table lived a spoiled rotten life, and died a quick, painless death instead of being raised in a barn, never seeing real grass or the light of day, never being loved or fed treats, then being electrocuted to death."
That usually shuts them up.

I have this problem in my office and the rude comments flow....as they are eating meat in their lunches. They say that this is "different".....that is their only reply to my explanations as to how that meat was brought to their table.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.....go on doing your life, growing your own meats, eating with integrity. You are not alone...there are many of us who are doing the same and for the same reasons.

These people choose to be ignorant and choose to by hypocritical.....don't give them the time it takes to make the speech.

It took some time, but I have most of my coworkers totally hooked on my organic, "farm fresh" eggs. I do raise meaties, but only for myself so far... turkeys as well. And I'm perfectly upfront. My family took it in stride, and my sister jokes that she's going to make a cute little sign for my "Killin' Korner" in the backyard.

I don't really have too much to add, but I think I am going to thaw out one of last years meaties for the crockpot tomorrow. Thanks for the dinner idea!

Which part for a "t"? the whole thing? I ask because it is something I'm completely able to do. lol.

I think even if they are city folk... people should know where their food comes from. If they are ok with the good, the bad, and the ugly of how their burger or nuggets came to be, then so be it... but I'm willing to bet the people who give you flack for processing your own birds would not be ok with the realities of how that burger and nuggets truely came to be.

I still say, it's far more inhumane to pretend that that chicken didn't suffer from broken bones before it was slaughtered or boiled alive or whatever and keep buying those products from those companies than it is to just bite the bullet and maybe get your own flock or even just buy your poultry and meat from local farmers who cared for their animals and who respected their lives and are thankful for the food they give... not just another item to be hung upside down on a conveyor line.

In the very least, people who give you flack for processing birds are simply rude. It's your buisness how you handle your flock.

And besides all that, don't you think for one second that if something crazy happened and there was a honest to God food shortage, they would buddy up to you in a flash and not have one problem at all with eatting roasted chicken at your house.

I started raising chickens for the eggs. I would love to raise some for meat but since I live in town I am unable to, this will change once I get my farm then I want to raise as much of my own food as possible. You can have chickens in town for eggs but you can not butcher your chickens for meat. I am not sure why but something to do with animal cruelty go figure. I am jealous of people who can raise their own meat I would love to. Some day I will. My children have always known where meat comes from I want them to respect that an animal gave their life so we could eat. Our roommate had a friend ask him why we have chickens he replied for the eggs, the friend said oh I could never eat those I like my eggs dead. Figure that one out.
