I have 30 guineas coming this week. We have a 12x16 run for the chickens and have just added on another 16 feet which can be closed off. What I need to know is in feeding the keets how long do they need to be on the game bird starter.......and also how long should I wait before I let them in with the chickens? How old should they be before you let them free range? Thanks for the input!

do a quick read of the gardening with guineas site-you'll get all your answers in one place and the things Frit says work.

If you can get a chick starter with around 24 % protein that is better than the ones with aroubnd 18%. Supposedly guinea keets need more than chicks.

When you get your guineas... you need to take a picture of one of them... and change your profile pick to a guinea fuzzy butt! Hee hee!

Well they came in today 31of them, they are SOOOOO cute! When I went to the post office to pick them up the lady said GOOD, I think they are hungry...LOL

I keep the keets in the brooder until they are feathered out, then put them in a separate pen that is inside my chicken run. This way, the chickens and other guineas can see them, but not peck at them. I keep them in that pen for 4-6 weeks with gamebird starter, then let them out with the other guineas during the day. This always works out fine. Keeping them in the pen for a few weeks also reinforces that this is their home, and they always come back in the evening to be put away. The eat the layer ration I use for the chickens at that point (when they come in at night).
