Hey everyone ive ordered 13 white rocks and 13 buff chicks. We planned to have them separated from our breeding coop. Pretty sure we're going to get males in the mixture and plan to breed pure breed white rock and buffs. But what kind of pen should I make for them? I want them to be a layer pen where we only gather from. What kind of layout should I go for? A lot of nesting boxes or just a few boxes?

Have you ordered straight run chicks, so you can pick nice cockerels out of the group? How many total birds will you plan to have?
BUILD BIG! Having around 25 adults, and then raising chicks, takes a fair amount of space, and separate areas, for breeding groups, and chicks.
You will need a building that can be divided into sections of at least 8'x10', and a run, or runs outside.
My coop/ run combination is 24'x14', divided into five sections that can be open or shut off from each other, and then the birds can free range too. It's not the most convenient design; you can do better starting from scratch!

My first group has 2 sheds for there coops and a very large run. Probably about 15ft by 10ft run. I planned to build a shed for my new group that's 26 chicks. When they get older they will be sexed and the males will be moved from the females until we're ready to pair them up. My little group is which is 13 adult chickens. We have an acre of land and more than enough room to build and play with.

We did have a section for our first small crew until we decided to have open gaps into the other run allowing the babies to cross instead of the adults. But now the bigger group can go back and forth like the teenage ones does.
