My quail are ranging from ages 1-2 years all 6 little girls and 2 boys. I hatched out over 20 babies last summer for my first time hatching. I'm ready to do more with my quail. I'd like to get them to lay more so I can add on to my flock. Right now they are only laying according to seasons. They laid all summer and fall and only 4 times this winter. Is there a trick I can use to get them laying now?

you can get them to lay year round by having at least 12 hours of light. A high protein feed is also required for them to lay year round.
Set up a timer that comes on a few hours before daylight and they should start to lay in a week or two.

yep, feed them a layer crumble ration if not already and expose them to 12-14 hours of incandescent light every day and darkness for the rest. Also, 2 year old birds won't lay as well as young birds so i wouldn't expect full-tilt production out of them but still should get one every other day. in the winter time I had mine with two red bulbs on in their coop 24/7 for extra warmth, and even though there was no period of real darkness (other than if they went outside into the run) they still laid eggs all winter long with just constant exposure to the dim light given off by the heat lamps.

Thanks everyone I'll set up some extra light sources and mix in some layer mash with their feed.

this is a good idea, but i would mention to not have it come on before dawn, the males will start making noise at like, 4am instead of 7 am lol. I give my birds only additional light from dusk to about 10:30pm. All my females have been laying all winter.

i also use purina gamebird startena 30% crumbles.
