I made my order for McMurray hatchery today, I got an assortment of 25 feather-legged bantams. I am sooo excited! This is my first chicken order from a hatchery, I used to get ducks from Metzer Farms when I was in 4-H, but I never ordered from anywhere else. And to get decent chickens in my area I would have to drive miles and miles all over the country, so I figured instead of waisting all that time and gas and spending 50 -100 dollars for one bird, I would save myself the stress and try a few hatcheries. I think next I will do Ideal. Im not really looking to get "show quality" or "perfect" birds, just some colorful fun interesting looking chickens for my backyard, and for the fresh eggs too! Anyways thought I would let everyone know, I will be posting pictures soon!!

When are you getting your chicks? I'm getting mine from MM also on the first weekend of March .
I have heard a few bad thing about chicks and the mail right now because of weather. I called MM, I live 4 hours from them yet its going to take three days till the chick get here, maybe I should just drive and pick them up?

Yea, if I only lived 4 hours away I would just make the drive to go and get them...it would probably be better for the chicks and you wouldnt lose any. I live in Indiana so Im going to have to have mine shipped. When I was in 4-H a few years ago, some of my friends used to order chicks around this time of year, so Im sure that they will be fine.

Atleast I hope so

I have heard some bad and good things about MM, and some good as well,I would really like to see if anyone has some pictures of birds that they have gotten from them before! That would be interesting to see what mine might look like! I know I will be posting tons of pics.

I got chicks from MM last year end of July. I had no problems with the hatchery. I had meat birds and BR hens, they are sweet hearts!

When I heard about some people from this site, having trouble with there orders, I called my post office. I spoke to the postmaster about the trip my chicks would have to take to get here. I didnt like the story she told me, about a adult roo that was nearly froze to death in the back of a cargo truck, just that week and he was shipped over night. The postmaster said to call the hatchery, find out how they ship. I did this and was not happy with what I heard.

MM said that my chicks would hatch on Saturday then be put in a box and on Sunday go by truck to Minneapolis Minnesota, from MN they would go to Madison Wisconsin. This would take 3 days maybe four if we have bad weather.

Then I said " for the love of God lady, why would it take 3 days, when I live 4 hours away!" :thun

She then very nicely said, that is how we ship them, you can pick them up if you want. I said, yes please, I would like to pick them up. So on March 1st I will be driving from madison WI to Iowa.

To bad you dont live closer, then I could pick up yours to , then you could pick then up at my place.

Good luck with your new chicks.

I wish I lived closer too! I would feel much better about picking my chickies up instead. Too bad I will be traveling south next week instead of north

Im going to Tennessee to pick up some furniture from my parents, and when I get home my darling chicks should be ready for me to pick up at the post office.
When I still lived with my parents a few years ago, my uncle was our postman, so whenever I got eggs or chicks in the mail he would watch for them and bring them to me as soon as possible. One ime I had a little disaster, I ordered silkies from a breeder in Alabama, well, 4 days went by with no chicks, no phone call from the post office...Then I began calling. The post office told me that they couldnt ship chicks to my post office...which didn't make sense because I had recieved atleast 5 other live orders from them before...I was HOT! So the first thing I did was call my uncle, and he said that he would take care of it, so I didn't have to make anymore phone calls. My chicks arrived the next day, supposedly they had gotten "lost" and they had been in the mail for 5 days... Luckily they were all alive, 2 were pretty weak, but they ended up being fine. So anyways, I do know a little bit about shipping experiences

Today I got kind of worried, with the weather and all...I hope it warms up, its only supposed to be 2 degrees this weekend! Its probably worse for you up there in wisconsin! I just hope MM doesnt go overboard on warmers and stick me with 30 extra males,
