Getting nervous about winter...

I think that as long as you insulate the roof a little -- it looks like thin plastic (?) that your chickens will be fine. Heat rises, so their body heat will be conserved up in the roost area, whereas if they were sleeping below they would lose more body heat to the shelter area. If you put some compacted straw (cross-sections of a straw bale, perhaps) on the roof and tied it on really good with a tarp, I would think that would keep them nice and cozy. Of course the idea of the plastic roof is to let the sun shine in, but if you are more worried about heat retention than daylight transmission, that would be my recommendation.


Disclaimer -- I don't own a henspa, but I do remember looking at photos of them a few years back. I have ducks, not chickens.
