Hi, we're getting ready to set up a small backyard coop for my 12 year old's 4H poultry club project. I had chickens on my childhood farm and am as excited as she is.

We're in the research stage, looking at coops, care and breeds. She is already partial to the Silky bantams and I'm leaning toward Cochin or Brahma bantams. We're planning on having only 3-4 birds and will keep only hens due to the proximity of our neighbors.

We have .8 acre yard in a somewhat rural subdivision with lots of trees and plan on having a mobile coop. We can't let our birds run loose so plan on adding runs to our small coop as the chicks grow.

We look forward to hearing from other 4H members and/or other enthusiast of the Silkies and Cochin breeds (or Brahmas) whichever we end up with.

Cochins are a nice start-up breed for young folks, as they are docile and show well, and there are usually good quality ones available from private breeders.

Hello, and welcome to BYC. I recommened Cochins. I'm in 4H with my Frizzle Cochin Bantam and won Grand Champion in Showmanship at the fair with her. Sweetest little chicken ever.
