Hello all!

We are getting ready to design and build our own chicken coop for a flock of 6 (3 RIR, 3 Barred Rock). We live in Maine, so winters can be quite harsh. We are open to all suggestions on how big the coops should be, what sorts of materials to use (or not use), and weatherization assistance. : )

6 birds at 4ft per bird=24sf aka 4x6 would be a good size, for winter no drafts but alot of ventilation up at the highest point alot of it.Coop made of spruce lumber with pressure treated legs, won't rot, for a run a chain link dog kennel is a pretty quick solution, easy to put a roof on to keep the snow out, I wrap 3 sides with a heavy canvas and the front with a clear shower curtain, acts like a greenhouse effect during the day. Just some ideas run them up the flag pole and see if it waves.

Ditto on the wrapping the run with shower curtains. I get heavy duty ones from Ocean State Job Lots for $4, and they have lasted 2 seasons so far.
