Getting Rhode Island Red Chickens Soon

Hello Everyone,

I'm not going to start a new thread, but I do have an update about our situation.

Hubby and I were planning to get the chicken coop built and finished by the coming week, and we were going to get our Rhode Island Reds on the 14th of March.

Since we are "only" renting this cottage, though, we had to ask the landlord for permission first. He has never come back to us with an answer, so it looks like he does not want us to get the chickens. We don't blame him, because he had quite some challenging tenants before us. They had been using the conservatory as a waste collection place, and rats were attracted and all over the place – in the garden and inside the house

We will give it more time for him to get to know us better, and then ask him again about the chickens. 🙏

In the meantime, I'll hang around and keep on reading and educating myself (and hubby) about BackYard Chickens.

Thank you, again, everyone – for the lovely welcome and the replies.
I did not see this thread until now, so have a late welcome to BackYard Chickens! I love Rhode Island Reds, and I hope you enjoy your journey with them, if you can successfully get the permission! Are you planning on getting a cockerel, or only females for the time being? Male Rhode Island Reds are known to be human-aggressive, so be careful.

I wish you luck with the RIR I started with them and Delaware girls. I was lucky with the 6 RIR boys I have. None are the least aggressive toward people, even strangers from the family. I'd love to have some Barred Rocks now as they are one of the longest lived breeds there is. Both breeds can make wonderful pets and 4 hens should get you 2-4 eggs a day.

Hello Everyone!

We just recently moved into a small cottage with a lovely garden, here in the Sunny South East of Ireland. The garden already has a few berry shrubs and 3 small raised beds in there. I'm so excited that, after nearly two years of renting another place (which is a long story to tell by itself :)), we finally found this one. The landlord is okay with us preparing the garden and all according to our wishes 🙌. So why not add a few chickens to our family?

We did a bit of a research and think that we would love to buy 3-5 Rhode Island Red which we scheduled to pick up the middle of March. Before that, we want to get things ready for the girls... Their chicken house / coop and the run. They will also have plenty of exercise running around in our garden.

Beside caring for chickens in the near future, and keeping the cottage in order, I like to crochet, knit socks, do embroidery with my "Jamie" (Janome 6700P), and I enjoy spending time outdoors with my two doggies. There is Rapsy, an amazing and gentle sheepdog (Border Collie) who will turn 14 in April, and Missy, a challenging, but lovely Collie-Springer-Terrier-Mix who is about 10-12 years old.

I'm looking forward to reading more about BackYard Chickens here.

Blessings from Ireland
Welcome. Blessing to you from South Carolina. I believe you will have chickens soon. I think you should tell your landlord what you told us - that you don't blame him because of previous tenants, but that you are different.

Thank y'all :love. I just enjoyed reading all the lovely feedbacks and the encouraging words. Ye are such a lovely crowd here.

I will keep that in mind about getting only the girls or getting boy/s, too. Good advice here. Thank you!

I'm using the extra time to get super-extra ready for our girls (and perhaps boy/s) to move in with us. I did a lot of research before getting my sheepdog (Border Collie), too, and I never regretted the time invested into doing my research/homework.

We will see... 🙏 🙌

:celebrate Our landlord has given us permission to keep chickens. I'm over the moon!

We are now seriously looking into coops and are currently planning to build one 🙏 before the girls will move in (hopefully by August).

Also, an update on the Rhode Island Reds – RIRs – 😇 After a bit more reading and research, we tend more toward the "Light Sussex" ones.

Thank you all for your lovely welcome, your kind words, and your encouragement here.

Looking forward to reading, replying, and posting more at BackYardChickens.
