Getting rid of my chickens!

I wasn't able to start my dogs on ducks because they would rough them up too much :(. We had our advanced titles in Cattle and Sheep before we decided it was "safe" to do ducks. I would love to get some Runners down the road, but I will most likely get some sheep or goats first :).
I know what you mean. I'm taking lessons, and they teach us on sheep, but at home I only have ducks and geese to practice on. It's difficult because Emma (my dog) gets frustrated when the ducks don't go where she wants, or when one books off by itsself to the safety of the coop, and she doesn't know how to deal with it "gently". And the geese are hard because they're so fast, and tend to attack rather then move when she's being too "foreward".

She's learning though and I'm looking foreward to the day when I can just send her out to gather the ducks and geese from the pasture and "bring em in".

BTW, for those that are concerned: she's never actually hurt any of the birds. Not even one limp. Just a few missing feathers here and there.

Duck con:
Mrs. won't touch duck. Not meat, not eggs, not anything.
Backyard turns into poo scape. Like the moon surface only brown. [1 acre 2 dozen ducks]

Mixed flock pros:
No duck chicken mutts.
Can have meat chicken and egg duck or meat duck and egg chicken. Duo purpose not necessary.
Chickens clean up duck spilled feed.

Most of the time walking slowly behind them with your arms stretched out can herd them where you want them to go, you can also use long poles as arm extensions. I have had a couple of my Scovies not want to go where I was herding and go up the steep bank behind our house, when that happens I just wait till they come down and try again. it's been along time though even the youngest are easy to herd they must watch their older flock members and learn from them.
Oh I thought herding was some special thing, my Runners already do that.
