I let the chickens out this morning, I had my back turned and he flogged me. He is normally very well behaved, but this is the second time. I have children so I feel like he can't stay. Very sad!

He just turned 1 year old. Is this a time for a rooster that they go thru a phase and then calm down again? I just don't know if I can trust him anymore.

This is the age they become who they will be. Get rid of him since you have kids, it's just too much of a risk. The hens will be fine without him. I've had chickens for 7yrs and had my share of no good roosters.

Well it is quite common place for him to attempt to acert his dominence in front of his girls, the level of his actions really depends on many factors , breed , compation from another in the flock recent additions of hens of breeding age broody hen attempting to set eggs, many things will cause this change in his behavior ,, as far as his age he is just coming into his own as a leader of the pack ,, u can try a few different methods to change this you can pin him to the ground and grab him infront of the girls to send a message that u are the boss after a few rounds he will respect u as the top dog or a squirt bottle when he looks to stand you off they all respect the bottle but the main thing is not to turn your back on him stare him down to let him know you are the boss, and if not cull him to the soup pot ,, good luck

Thank You for the advice. I think you are right, I am going to cull him. Either to another home who knows his behavior and is Ok with it, or put him in the pot. I would feel horrible if my kids were attacked. As it was this morning with his small tantrum, I have a bruise on my leg. I actually think the hens will be happier without the rooster.

Just remember that his behavior is pre programed and as natural as god has intended it to be,,, and as a keeper of a flock proper management is the responsibility you have taken on when you brought them home,, as humane as it sounds to re home a problem bird is just to pass him and his problem on to another flock ,, culling to the freezer might be the best plan , my grandfather used to say you learn allot about life and death on the farm

I had a really mean rooster. He attacked me at every turn. I tried everything, pinning, holding upside down and separating him. He did get better with me, but then my son walked outside and the rooster attacked him. He was a beautiful Polish rooster. I had raised him from a baby. So we did love him. He was a great protector of the hens and was just doing his job. So I put an ad in Craigslist, stressing the fact that whoever got him could have no children. A very nice older couple adopted. They had a lot of experience with chickens, so they could program him to know his place.
I have five other roosters and they all know their place. They protect the hens, make babies and know their place in the family. I just wanted to let you know that there are good roosters out there. Just make sure they know their place in the family.

I agree. Do you know how the people you sold him to programed him to know his place in the family?
