Can you "train" roos to be nice? Or is it just that some are nice and some are jerks?

I have a new one and I would hate for him to turn out like my Red, not that I could get rid of Red now, he is a jerk, but I love him anyway.

I just don't want my new Barred Rock to be the same way.

Oh and can they two ever free range together? Or will one always have to be cooped up?

You can probably free range them together just fine if they have space to escape from each other. As for keeping them nice, just play with them, hold them, let them know you are boss, and hope for the best. Not much else you can do.

Our two roos free range together every day. They hang out together most of the day. It's funny to watch them they both will run full out across the field to go gather up one of the hens. They posture , but luckily we have had no real aggression.
